Beach-Hopping Southcoast

The route initially leads out of Lagos, and along the main road N-125 in the direction of Luz. After you have passed the campsite on the right, there is a roundabout where you come to Espiche on the right, straight ahead (or second exit) continue towards Sagres, and left to Luz. We follow the road to Luz and leave the main road to follow the smaller roads. Before the expansion of this N-125 between Lagos and Sagres, some of the roads on our route were the same old roads that were the only connections between the villages until a few decades ago.

Briefly about Luz: In Luz, there is a large beach with a developed promenade, where you can find a variety of restaurants and shops. I was never a big fan of the village as it is very much influenced by English vacationers and English retirees. Contrary to the German pronunciation ‘Lu (t) z’, which unfortunately one hears very often and makes us smile again and again, in Portuguese it is pronounced like ‘Lusch’.

If you want to save yourself Lutz, take the first exit at the roundabout and follow the road to Burgau. Be careful, the road becomes relatively narrow between the villages and can get a little wobbly.

Briefly about Burgau: The small village of Burgau has more flair in my eyes. Small narrow streets, in between restaurants and shops. The streets lead down to Burgau beach. I haven’t had any culinary experience so far, but I’ve heard of bars that have good live musicians playing there more often. These gigs are mostly in the evening.

As soon as you drive out of Burgau, you will first be led downhill on a beautiful long country road and then uphill again. Before going uphill again, you can turn onto a wide gravel path that leads to the small Cabana Velhas beach. There is a large beach bar and a large parking lot. Only the gravel road has to be driven very carefully, otherwise, you will sit down or get stuck.

If you follow the road further uphill, you can also turn onto a gravel path at the highest point, which leads to a small ruin. The Forte da Almádena. From up there, you have a wonderful view of the beaches of Luz and Burgau in the east, and in the west, you can see the bays of Furnas, Figueira, and co.

If you follow the road without making a detour to the Forte, you will now come to the most spectacular point on the road. Well secured and developed, you drive along the cliffs and have a wonderful view of the bay of Boca do Rio. Caution, adventurous driving behavior is often shown here in the high season. After following the steep road, you will now be led on cobblestone pavement to a crossroads, where you come right back to the N-125 and that at the level of Budens (Intermache on the main road). If you follow the road to the left, you can either continue to Boca do Rio, or take the next hill on the right and turn towards Salema.

Boca do Rio beach isn’t exactly that special. There you meet fishermen more often and the nearby parking lot to the water makes it easy to use stand-up paddles, canoes, or kayaks. From there you can paddle along the bays from Salema via Figueira to Furnas. Beautiful! But watch out for all paddlers, from Furnas there are significantly stronger currents and waves.

If you follow the road uphill, the village of Salema awaits you on the side behind. Follow the road until you come to an intersection. There you come right back to the N-125 and on the left, you will be guided once through the city center. There are only a few parking spaces on the main promenade, but if you drive through once, over the small bridge and through the narrow houses, you can follow the next street on the left and come to another parking lot, which takes you down a staircase to the western part of the beach in Salema.

There are also several cafés and restaurants in the small town center of Salema, but apart from a coffee, I haven’t eaten anything there. If you do not turn left to the alternative parking lot in Salema just described, then continue in the direction of the village of Figueira. And here it gets a bit more complicated, depending on which beach you are heading for. You can choose from Figueira Beach or Furnas. Between the two there is even a third bay, which can only be reached via the beaches or the beaten path.

Both, regardless of whether Figueira or Furnas, are characterized above all by their naturalness. No houses, no bars or public facilities, even the streets that lead to the respective parking lots are not completely developed. Please refer to the Google route for navigation.

On the developed part of the road that leads to Furnas, one comes to the beaches of Zavial and Ingrina. Both have parking spaces and beach bars. Both beaches can be suitable for surfing. Especially in spring or autumn, the very confused waves on the west coast can lead to perfect conditions on the south coast. The advantage is that it only takes twenty minutes by car from Zavial on the south coast to Cordoama on the west coast. You can find the forecast in the respective posts.

And this ends my tour on the south coast. If you don’t want to go back these small paths, follow the road from Ingrina back to Zavial, and from there the road to Raposeira to get back on the N125. When you arrive in Raposeira at the eternal red traffic light, you can turn left and come to Vila do Bispo, Sagres, or Carrapateira, if you turn right at the traffic light you come back to Lagos via Budens (approx. 18km).

Die Route führt zunächst raus aus Lagos, und entlang der Hauptstraße N-125 in Richtung Luz. Nachdem man am Camping-Platz auf der rechten Seite vorbei ist, folgt ein Kreisverkehr, indem man rechts nach Espiche kommt, gerade aus (oder zweite Ausfahrt) geht weiter Richtung Sagres und links nach Luz. Wir folgenden der Straße nach Luz verlassen die Hauptstraße, um den kleineren Straßen zu folgen. Vor dem Ausbau dieser N-125 zwischen Lagos und Sagres, waren einige der Straßen auf unserer Route, ebendiese alten Straßen, die bis vor wenigen Jahrzehnten die einzigen Verbindungen zwischen den Dörfern waren.

Kurz zu Luz: In Luz gibt es einen großen Strand mit einer ausgebauten Promenade, an der man eine Vielzahl von Restaurants und Shops findet. Persönlich war ich nie ein großer Fan des Dorfes, da es sehr durch englische Urlauber und englische Rentner geprägt ist. Entgegen der deutschen Aussprache ‘Lu(t)z’, was man leider sehr häufig hört und uns immer wieder zum Schmunzeln bringt, wird es im Portugiesischen ehr wie ‘Lusch’ ausgesprochen.

Wenn man sich Lutz sparen möchte, dann nimmt man gleich wieder die erste Ausfahrt im Kreisverkehr und folgt der Straße nach Burgau. Vorsicht, die Straße wird zwischen den Dörfern relativ eng und kann ein wenig wackelig werden.

Kurz zu Burgau: Das kleine Dorf Burgau hat in meinen Augen mehr Flair. Kleine enge Gassen, zwischendrin Restaurants und Shops. Die Straßen führen runter zum Strand von Burgau. Kulinarisch Erfahrungen habe ich bisher keine gesammelt, jedoch habe ich von Bars gehört, die häufiger gute Live-Musiker dort spielen haben. Diese Gigs sind meist abends.

Sobald man aus Burgau wieder rausfährt, wird man auf einer schönen langen Landstraße zuerst bergab, und dann wieder bergauf geführt. Bevor es wieder bergauf geht, kann man auf einen breiten Schotterweg abbiegen, der einem zu den kleinen Strand Cabana Velhas führt. Es gibt dort eine große Strandbar, sowie einen großen Parkplatz. Einzig der Schotterweg ist sehr vorsichtig zu befahren, sonst setzt man auf oder bleibt hängen.

Folgt man der Straße weiter bergauf, kann man am höchsten Punkt ebenfalls auf einen Schotterweg abbiegen, der einem zu einer kleinen Ruine führt. Das Forte da Almádena. Von da oben hat man eine wunderschöne Aussicht auf die Strände von Luz und Burgau im Osten, und im Westen kann man die Buchten von Furnas, Figueira und Co erahnen.

Folgt man der Straße weiter, ohne Abstecher zum Forte, dann kommt man nun an den spektakulärsten Punkt der Straße. Gut gesichert und ausgebaut, fährt man entlang der Klippen und hat einen wunderschönen Blick auf die Bucht von Boca do Rio. Vorsicht, hier wird in der Hochsaison gerne abenteuerliches Fahrverhalten zum Besten gegeben. Nachdem man der steilen Straße gefolgt ist, wird man nun auf Kopfsteinpflaster zu einer Kreuzung geführt, wo man rechts zurück zur N-125 kommt und das auf Höhe von Budens (Intermache an der Hauptstraße). Folgt man der Straße nach links, kann man entweder zum Boca do Rio weiterfahren, oder den nächsten Hügel rechts nehmen und in Richtung Salema abbiegen.

Der Strand von Boca do Rio ist nicht wirklich besonders. Dort trifft man häufiger auf Fischer und durch den nahen Parkplatz zum Wasser kann gut mit Stand-up-Paddels, Kanus oder Kajaks gut einsetzen. Von dort kann man entlang der Buchten von Salema über Figueira bis nach Furnas paddeln. Wunderschön! Doch für alle Paddler aufgepasst, ab Furnas setzen deutlich stärkere Strömungen und Wellen ein.

Folgt man der Straße bergauf, erwartet einen auf der dahinter liegenden Seite das Dorf Salema. Der Straße folgen, bis man auf eine Kreuzung trifft. Dort kommt man rechts wieder zur N-125 und links wird man einmal durch den Stadtkern geleitet. An der Hauptpromenade finden sich nur wenige Parkplätze, doch wenn man einmal durchfährt, über die kleine Brücke und durch die engen Häuser, kann man der nächsten Straße links folgen und kommt zu einem weiteren Parkplatz, der einen über eine Treppe runter zum westlichen Teil des Strands in Salema führt.

In dem kleinen Stadtkern von Salema finden sich ebenfalls mehrere Cafés und Restaurants, doch bis auf einen Kaffee habe ich dort noch nichts zu mir genommen. Wenn man nicht links abbiegt, zum eben beschriebenen alternativen Parkplatz in Salema, dann fährt man weiter in Richtung des Dorfes Figueira. Und hier wird es ein Ticken komplizierter, je nach dem welchen Strand man ansteuert. Zur Auswahl stehen Figueira Strand oder Furnas. Zwischen den beiden ist sogar noch eine dritte Bucht, die kann man allerdings nur über die Strände oder Trampelwege erreichen.

Beide, egal ob Figueira oder Furnas zeichnen sich vor allem durch ihre Natürlichkeit aus. Keine Häuser, auch keine Bars oder öffentliche Einrichtungen, selbst die Straßen, die zu den jeweiligen Parkplätzen führen, sind nicht komplett ausgebaut. Die Navigation bitte der Google-Route entnehmen.

Auf dem ausgebauten Teil der Straße, die zum Furnas führt, kommt man zu den Stränden Zavial und Ingrina. Beide haben Parkplätze und Strandbars. Beide Strände können zum Surfen geeignet sein. Gerade im Frühjahr oder Herbst können die sehr wirren Wellen an der Westküste für perfekte Bedingungen an der Südküste führen. Der Vorteil ist, dass man mit dem Auto von Zavial an der Südküste bis nach Cordoama an der Westküste nur zwanzig Minuten braucht. Den Forecast findet ihr in den jeweiligen Posts.

Und hiermit endet meine Tour an der Südküste. Möchte man diese kleinen Wege nicht zurückfahren, dann folgt man der Straße von Ingrina zurück zum Zavial, und von dort der Straße bis nach Raposeira, um zurück auf die N125 zu kommen. In Raposeira an der ewigen roten Ampel angekommen, kann man Links abbiegen und kommt nach Vila do Bispo, Sagres oder Carrapateira, biegt man an der Ampel rechts ab, kommt man über Budens wieder zurück nach Lagos (ca. 18km).
